The Opportunity

The Department of Physics invites applications for a full-time Lecturer to commence July 15, 2021; the majority of the teaching associated with this position will occur at SFU’s Surrey campus. We are searching for an individual with a passion for teaching and communicating physics to undergraduates and the public and a colleague with an interest in working in a collaborative team-based environment. The Department of Physics engages a faculty complement consisting of 5 teaching-focused and 25 research-focused faculty members. We have strong undergraduate and graduate programs, and a commitment to public outreach. Our research strengths are concentrated in the areas of condensed matter, biological physics, particle physics and cosmology, AMO physics and quantum information science. The Successful Candidate

The successful candidate will make a significant contribution to our undergraduate program in a variety of ways including coordinating undergraduate labs, teaching lecture and studio courses, training and mentoring teaching assistants, participating in outreach activities, and showing leadership in undergraduate physics education. They will demonstrate willingness and openness to the creation of an inclusive learning environment for a diverse student body.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Physics and should have a marked interest in and demonstrated ability for teaching at the undergraduate level. A minimum of two years’ experience as a physics instructor at the post-secondary level with duties including curriculum design and teaching assistant supervision is preferred. The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to excellence in teaching and communicating physics to the public through outreach events, outstanding communication skills, and enthusiasm for new course and instructional laboratory development. The successful candidate’s teaching and service track record will illustrate our shared values of equity, diversity, and inclusion, and our commitment to respectful interactions with all students, staff and faculty.

University of Calgary: Assistant Professor (Tenure-Track), Optical / Near-infrared Astronomy

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Calgary seeks outstanding candidates for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level in Optical/Near-infrared Astronomy with an anticipated start date of January 1, 2022 or later.

The successful candidate will build a vibrant, independent research program in observational optical/NIR astronomy that will contribute to and complement existing research excellence in areas that include the large-scale interstellar medium, astrochemistry, galactic magnetism, star formation, nuclear astrophysics, x-ray astronomy and gamma ray sources. You will join a group of internationally recognized experts in computational astrophysics and observational astronomy spanning wavelengths from the radio to gamma rays, who are involved in multiple major national and international instrumentation projects. The Department of Physics and Astronomy is also home to the Rothney Astrophysical Observatory (RAO), a premier facility for undergraduate student instruction, public education and outreach, with over 10,000 visitors annually.

Applicants must possess a PhD in Astrophysics, Physics, or equivalent at the time of appointment and experience at the postdoctoral level is highly desirable. Successful applicants must be enthusiastic about contributing to teaching and research, and demonstrate the potential to excel in both. Specifically, the successful candidate must demonstrate evidence of the following:

•Potential to develop a productive, sustained, externally-funded research program utilizing state-of-the-art observatories and instruments
•Demonstrated record or potential to deliver high-quality instruction at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including observational astronomy courses utilizing astrophysical observatories including the RAO
•Ability to provide effective graduate supervision
•Strong track record of publications in high quality peer-reviewed scientific journals with impact in the discipline
•Demonstrated ability and capacity to collaborate and work well as part of a team
•Commitment to supporting an equitable, diverse and inclusive work environment
