NRC is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow to carry out research on the technologies for detecting and characterizing, by direct imaging, exoplanets around the nearest stars. The Postdoctoral Fellow will join the NRC NEW EARTH team, and focus his/her research at developing an end-to-end simulation of the Planet System Imager (PSI) instrument for the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) instrument. By including the latest frontier developments in the field, the Fellow will play a key role in estimating realistic performances of planet finding instruments for ELT class observatories. The researcher’s findings will be central for understanding the various challenges, and in setting requirements to detect and to characterize Earth-size exoplanets around the nearest stars with PSI and TMT.

During the appointment, the researcher will also have the opportunity to participate in NEW EARTH laboratory experiments, study the various limits from analyzing Gemini Planet Imager data, and collaborate and/or lead observing campaigns to search or to characterize exoplanets.

The initial appointment is of two years duration. Although the hiring is at the postdoctoral level, this is considered a term staff scientist position with all the associated benefits, including paid maternity and parental leave, vacation, accruable pension contributions and others. In addition to a highly competitive salary, the successful applicant will receive support for publications, observing and conference travel.

To be eligible, applicants must have acquired their Ph.D. within the last three years or expect to obtain their degree before taking up the position. NRC is an equal opportunity employer.

Applications should be made by 12 June 2019 via the process described at the URL provided.

Included Benefits:

We seek an excellent radio astronomer to work with the CHIME/FRB consortium to help develop the software and hardware needed to develop, deploy, and use outrigger stations to localize the many Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) detected by CHIME/FRB.  CHIME, the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment, offers a unique combination of high sensitivity and wide field-of-view, and is rapidly becoming established as the dominant instrument in discovering new FRBs.  The next key step is to obtain accurate positions for those FRBs through long-distance interferometry, using “outrigger” stations at great distances from CHIME. There are a number of practical difficulties to be overcome, and the CHIME/FRB consortium is adopting a staged approach, deploying prototype outrigger stations near the CHIME site (the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory [DRAO] near Penticton, BC) to compare results from triggered data dumping and after-the-fact correlation against those from standard real-time interferometry.  Once this is proven more distant stations will be built to allow sub-arcsecond astrometry.  This postdoctoral fellow will work the CHIME/FRB consortium and the staff at DRAO to perform the early, proof-of-concept work, and to flesh out the design of the full-scale instrument.

The initial appointment is of two years duration. Althoughthe hiring is at the postdoctoral level, this is considered a term staff scientist position with all the associated benefits, including paid maternity and parental leave, vacation, accruable pension contributions and others. Desired starting date: September – December 2019

The National Research Council of Canada, Herzberg Astronomy and Astrophysics Research Centre, is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow who will develop a pioneering program to use existing, multi-wavelength, state-of-the-art imaging and spectroscopy for the Virgo Cluster to address the formation and evolution of cosmic structures, including galaxies, stellar nuclei and star clusters. Of particular interest are candidates who will lead the study of scaling relations for Virgo’s stellar systems, but all applicants with science interests that will benefit from the use of Virgo’s diverse dataset, which includes data from CFHT (NGVS, VESTIGE), Gemini, VLT, Hubble, Astrosat, Chandra, XMM, Hershel, JCMT, VLASS and CHIME, will be given full consideration.

Working collaboratively with NRC astronomers and computer scientists, and exploiting the advanced processing and analysis capabilities offered by the Canadian Astronomy Data Centre (CADC) and the Canadian Advanced Network for Astronomical Research (CANFAR),  the successful applicant will develop techniques needed for source identification and characterization across multiple datasets, and contribute to a user-driven data interrogation system that will enable to extract source parameters directly from pixel values rather than parametric, catalogue-based measurements. Applicants with strong scientific backgrounds as well as experience in the management and handling of large and diverse datasets, and/or in Machine Learning and Convolutional Neural Network based techniques are particularly encouraged to apply.

The initial appointment is of two years duration. Although the hiring is at the postdoctoral level, this is considered a term staff scientist position with all the associated benefits, including paid maternity and parental leave, vacation, accruable pension contributions and others.
