The Department of Physics & Astronomy invites applications for two sessional positions in the September 2021 to April 2022 academic year. The first position will teach 12 credit hours including four courses at first and upper year levels. The second position will teach 10.5 credit hours including one course at first year level and an assortment of first year lab sessions.  Course assignments will depend on the abilities of the successful applicants.

The normal mode of course delivery is in-person; however, given the uncertainties inherent in the current pandemic, applicants should also be prepared to teach in an online synchronous format.
Qualifications: A PhD is preferred; however, candidates with a Masters degree and successful record of teaching experience may be considered.

UNBC: Senior Laboratory Instructor, Advanced Research Computing Office of Research

The University of Northern British Columbia invites applications for a Probationary position as a Senior Laboratory Instructor, with proposed starting date of July 1, 2021. (The rank of Senior Laboratory Instructor will be commensurate with the education and experience of the successful candidate.) The Advanced Research Computing Senior Lab Instructor (SLI) will report to the Office of Research and will also be appointed in a relevant Academic Unit and may teach (as time allows) courses or portions of courses to graduate students and senior undergraduates on topics relevant to research computing. The SLI supports researchers (including faculty and students) in their use of advanced and high performance computing (HPC) at UNBC.

This support includes working with researchers to assist with specific computing needs that arise including installing and using software, parallelizing, debugging and trouble shooting codes, and helping researchers interact with Compute Canada resources. The SLI will manage user accounts, requests for HPC systems, system administration, IT security related to HPC, UNIX maintenance and installation, maintenance of HPC Lab equipment, monitoring systems, responding to alerts and scheduler tuning for clusters. The SLI will work closely with ITS on new HPC project implementations to ensure systems will work properly in a complex infrastructure as well as integrating research systems with core IT services. The successful candidate will maintain HPC lab documentation and web pages, create and deliver workshops to users, and promote and encourage use of the HPC lab resources at UNBC. The SLI will develop project plans with tasks and timelines for future advanced research computing infrastructure projects. The SLI will work with the Advanced Research Computing Management Board on policies and planning related to HPC and assessing future UNBC needs for advanced research computing.

Previous experience with UNIX (essential) and Windows operating systems in a networked hybrid environment, with exposure to the tools used in advanced research computing / high performance computing is required. Experience with software installation and scripting languages in a UNIX environment is essential, and server and software configuration experience is an asset. Excellent interpersonal and teaching skills and the ability to establish effective working relationships with a diverse group, including faculty, students, and other researchers as well as senior technical staff, is essential. Applicants for this position should hold a relevant graduate degree that ideally includes experience in advanced research computing and scientific programming, together with a minimum of three years of relevant experience with HPC or equivalent systems, preferably in an academic environment. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered. Executive Director, Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Corporation

Applications are invited for the position of Executive Director of the  Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT). Located on Maunakea, Hawai’i,  the 3.6m CFHT has historically been a world leader in wide-field  optical and near infrared imaging and, with the recently commissioned  instruments SPIRou and SITELLE, now also plays important roles in the  search for exoplanets around low-mass stars and the study of emission  line objects in the nearby and distant universe. We are seeking an  innovative and creative leader who, while maximizing the scientific  output of the current instrumentation suite, will usher CFHT into a  new era of scientific discoveries by taking a proactive role in the  advancement of the Maunakea Spectroscopic Explorer (MSE), endorsed by  the CFHT Partners and Board of Directors as the most scientifically  impactful future redevelopment of the site. The new CFHT Executive  Director will also represent CFHT within the Maunakea Observatories in  all negotiations regarding the renewal of the Maunakea Master Lease  and CFHT sublease.

CFHT has a staff of approximately 50 and operates with a US$8M annual  budget. The Executive Director is appointed by the Board of the CFHT  Corporation, a non-profit organization incorporated in the State of  Hawaii. Current members of the Corporation are the National Research  Council of Canada, the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique of  France, and the University of Hawaii. The Executive Director is  responsible to the Board for managing all aspects of the Corporation,  including the operation of the telescope, the implementation of the  observatory’s scientific and technical program, the appointment of  personnel, the preparation of budgets, the administration of financial  affairs, communications, and the negotiations of international  agreements. The Executive Director is also responsible for pursuing  extramural funding and potential associate partners, as directed by  the Board.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Astronomy or a closely related field,  or equivalent combination of education and experience. The successful  applicant will be committed to promote, within the Observatory, a  diverse, inclusive environment and a sense of belonging, and to foster  a culture of understanding and reconciliation with the native Hawaiian  community.  In addition, the following qualifications are considered  desirable:

The Executive Director is expected to reside on Hawai’i Island, and to  take office in the CFHT Headquarters located in Waimea (Kamuela). A  competitive salary will be offered and the Corporation provides a  comprehensive benefit package. The starting date for the position is  negotiable, and could be as early as September 2021. The Executive  Director term is five years and can be extended upon review.

Call for international expressions of interest to engage with the Anglo-Australian Telescope

The Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT) Consortium is currently seeking  expressions of interest from international groups to engage with the  AAT facility through pay-for-access arrangements from July 2022.

The AAT is a 3.9m equatorially-mounted Cassegrain reflector, located  at Siding Spring Observatory in NSW, Australia. It can be accessed via  remote observing from nodes around the world. The telescope is  operated by the Australian National University on behalf of the  funding Consortium, which at present comprises 13 Australian  universities.

The AAT currently offers four facility-class spectrographic  instruments: AAOmega (with 2dF or Koala), Hermes and Veloce. The new  Hector spectrograph is expected to come online in 2021. Canadian Astroparticle Physics Summer School (CAPSS) – Deadline extended

The successful candidate will build a vibrant, independent research program in observational optical/NIR astronomy that will contribute to and complement existing research excellence in areas that include the large-scale interstellar medium, astrochemistry, galactic magnetism, star formation, nuclear astrophysics, x-ray astronomy and gamma ray sources. University of Toronto: Postdoctoral Researcher, Canadian Statistical Sciences Institute Collaborative Research Team with CHIME/FRB

The University of Toronto (U of T) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher in Astrostatistics and Astroinformatics to join a team of astronomers and statisticians at the David A. Dunlap Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics at U of T, the Department of Statistical Sciences at U of T, the Dunlap Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics at U of T, and the Department of Statistics & Actuarial Sciences at Simon Fraser University.

The postdoctoral fellow will help develop methods for the analysis and statistical inference of data collected by the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment Fast Radio Burst (CHIME/FRB) project, and will collaborate with researchers at U of T, SFU, and within the CHIME/FRB Collaboration.
