The Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics (CITA), a national centre for theoretical astrophysics hosted by the University of Toronto, invites applications for a tenure-stream faculty position, to commence July 1, 2013. The search is open to candidates at the Assistant or Associate Professor level.

Applicants from any area of theoretical astrophysics, cosmology and early universe physics are encouraged to apply; we seek candidates with exceptionally strong and internationally recognized research records, and outstanding promise of future research accomplishments.

Additional selection criteria include demonstrated excellence in teaching, in particular working with research fellows, graduate and undergraduate students, and to assume a leadership role in administering CITA’s active postdoctoral and visitor programs. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellence in research and have a strong commitment to excellence in teaching. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

CITA is an institute within the Faculty of Arts and Science, University of Toronto. The present complement of research staff includes six faculty and over 25 research fellows. The unique research environment at CITA is enhanced by close ties to the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics, the Dunlap Institute, the Department of Physics, and the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research Cosmology and Gravity Program.

CITA expects to offer one or more Research Associate positions of three
to five years duration.The start date will be September 1, 2013.
Applicants should have an excellent research record in astrophysics and
postdoctoral experience. Funds will be available for travel and other
research expenses. The primary duty is to carry out original research in
theoretical astrophysics, but Research Associates are also expected to
work with postdoctoral fellows and to assist with the administration of

The Outer Solar Systems Origins Survey (OSSOS) is an approved Large Program for four years on the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (see http://www.cfht.hawaii.edu/en/science/LP_13_16/), to detect a large sample of outer Solar System moving objects.

Two postdoctoral fellows are sought to begin in 2013 to be involved in discovery/tracking observations, detected object exploitation, and scientific analysis/modelling of the survey’s results. Previous work in the field of outer Solar System small-body science is needed. Depending on the postdoctoral fellow’s interests and the eligibility for various funding sources, the work might be undertaken at either the University of British Columbia (Vancouver), the National Research Council of Canada (Victoria), or the Universite de Franche-Compte (Besancon, France).

Stage postdoctoral en astrophysique stellaire à l`Université de Montréal

Avec la participation du programme de formation de Personnel Hautement Qualifié, financé par une subvention de l’Agence spatiale canadienne, l’aile canadienne de l’équipe scientifique du projet BRITE-Constellation (http://www.brite-constellation.at/) offre un stage postdoctoral à l’Université de Montréal. Le (la) candidat(e) devra diriger sa propre recherche dans le domaine de la variabilité stellaire en utilisant les nanosatellites BRITE (qui devront être lancés en orbite sous peu) et maîtriser les techniques de la photométrie temporelle à haute précision obtenue à partir de l’espace. L’interaction avec les autres membres du Centre de recherche en astrophysique du Québec (http://craq-astro.ca/),

Post-doctoral position in stellar astrophysics at the Université de Montréal

As part of a programme to train Highly Qualified Personnel financed by a grant from the Canadian Space Agency, the Canadian wing of the BRITE-Constellation (http://www.brite-constellation.at/ ) science team is opening a post-doctoral position at the Université de Montréal (Québec, Canada). The candidate is expected to carry out original research in stellar variability using the soon-to-be launched BRITE nanosatellites and master the techniques of time-dependent high-precision photometry from space. Interaction with other members of the Centre for Research in Astrophysics of Québec (http://craq-astro.ca/index_en.php ), as well as the three other Canadian and eight other international BRITE team members and their associates is encouraged. A PhD in physics or astronomy is required.

Potential candidates with the required expertise are encouraged to apply. Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Western University in London, Ontario, Canada. The successful candidate will pursue projects with Dr. Pauline Barmby involving the application of in astroinformatics techniques to the study of resolved stellar populations and star formation in nearby galaxies. Candidates should have a PhD in astronomy, astrophysics, or physics; a strong computational background is required and experience with observations of nearby galaxies is strongly preferred.

The astronomy group at Western includes members with interests in planetary science, star formation, hot stars, nearby galaxies, and AGN. The successful candidate will be encouraged to interact with other faculty and to take an active role in mentoring our growing group of graduate students. The SHARCNET facility and Faculty of Science program in Scientific Computing provide opportunities for cross-disciplinary interaction.

The initial appointment is for one year but may be extended for an additional year subject to satisfactory performance and the availability of funds. The starting date is September 2012 or as soon as possible thereafter. The Dunlap Institute for Astronomy & Astrophysics at University of Toronto invites applicants with an expertise in integral field unit (IFU) spectroscopy and data processing development to apply for a postdoctoral research position.

The successful applicant will work on the upcoming Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA: PI Kevin Bundy) project, which is one of 3 After SDSS-III (AS3) programs to be conducted on the Sloan 2.5m Telescope. MaNGA is an optical fiber-based multi-object IFU that will target 10,000 galaxies over a 6 year campaign, with a scheduled first light in Fall 2014. The successful candidate will participate in the development of MaNGA’s data processing and analysis pipeline with Prof Shelley Wright and other MaNGA team members at Toronto, Dr. David Law and Dr. Anne-Marie Weijmans. Independent research will also be encouraged and supported during the postdoctoral position.

The Dunlap Institute’s mission is to initiate and embrace innovative instrumentation and observational programs. The institute is complemented by vibrant interactions with both the Department of Astronomy & Astrophysics (DAA) and the Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics (CITA).

The appointment is for two years with an expectation of renewal for a third year on satisfactory performance. The expected start date is Fall 2012. The salary range will be from $46,000 – $53,000 CAD per year, and will be based on experience of the successful applicant. An annual research stipend will be given for research related expenditures. Relocation costs will be subsidized following Univ. of Toronto policies and based on the distance of the move.

A PhD in astronomy or physics is required. Experience with data processing and software development is preferable, although applicants whose studies have primarily focused on IFU observations and analysis will be considered.
