Dunlap Postdoctoral Fellowships in Astronomical Instrumentation

The University of Toronto ( invites applications for Dunlap Postdoctoral Fellowships in Astronomical Instrumentation within the Dunlap Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics ( The Dunlap Institute pursues innovative instrumentation, technology and observational research to advance our understanding of the Universe, in close collaboration with Toronto colleagues in the David A. Dunlap Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics ( (DADDAA) and in the Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics ( (CITA).

Dunlap Fellows are expected to conduct a program of original research either independently or in collaboration with others at the University of Toronto and will be offered professional development and mentoring across a range of topics relevant to a scientific career. Candidates will be selected on the basis of potential for innovative research in astronomical instrumentation or experimental astrophysics, as well as, on synergy with existing activities within the Dunlap Institute. (Potential for innovative research can be established through past accomplishments, future plans, publications, reference letters, or any combination thereof.) The Dunlap Institute is involved in multiple astronomical instrumentation projects ranging from radio/sub-mm to the ultraviolet/optical/infrared (UVOIR). The Institute also supports a research and development program specializing in adaptive optics, astrophotonics, UVOIR instrumentation, balloon-borne telescopes, radio receivers, radio dishes, and signal processing. Major instrumentation projects ( currently underway at the Institute include CHIME Outriggers, CHORD, Dragonfly, GIRMOS, GPI Upgrade, and SuperBIT.

Dunlap Fellows have access to laboratories, computing clusters and fabrication facilities, and can propose for additional internal support for their experimental plans. Dunlap Fellows are also encouraged to participate in the Institute’s outreach and training initiatives. McMaster University: Tenure Stream Assistant Professor in Observational Exoplanet Astronomy

The Department of Physics & Astronomy at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor in observational exoplanet astronomy beginning July 1, 2022.

Invitation for Canadians to join the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA)

The Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) is the precursor of SKA-Low and is a powerful science facility in its own right (see for details).

The MWA’s particular attributes include:
– wide frequency range (70–300 MHz) with flexible tuning
– a very wide field of view (hundreds of square degrees)
– high angular resolution (several arcminutes)
– extreme (digital) pointing agility

MWA phase 2, which has improved the sensitivity of the array by an order of magnitude, is now operating. A further upgrade, MWA phase 3, is in the planning stages.

The MWA is an international collaboration, with partners from Australia, New Zealand, Japan, China, India, Canada and the United States. Canada is a full member of the MWA project, with representation on the MWA Board.

Kamloops Statement (June 10, 2021)

The unmarked burial sites at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School represent a colonial atrocity. The 215 children whose remains were found were taken from their families in a systematic effort to eradicate their cultural identities. Thousands of others were forced into dozens of similar institutions and the school in Kamloops is unlikely to be the only site where bodies will be found. It is heinous in the extreme that defenceless and innocent children suffered emotional and physical violence, and the trauma of these events continues to be felt today.

Canada’s astronomical community joins with Canadians from all walks of life to stand in solidarity with the Tk’emlúps te Secwepemc First Nations, as well as with other communities and families who have lost their children at the hands of the Canadian government and religious institutions. Their pain and grief cannot be imagined by us, and we recognize that the recent confirmation of the Kamloops unmarked graves may be particularly distressing for Indigenous members of our Society.

As academics and educators, we must confront the fact that residential school atrocities were committed in the name of education and acknowledge the role that academia has played in perpetuating colonial structures.

CASCA’s recently published Long Range Plan lays out specific actions that we as astronomers will take to address racism and inequity in our community, particularly the marginalization of Indigenous Peoples. As we take these first steps toward fulfilling the LRP vision for a more inclusive community, the news from Kamloops is a stark reminder of the ongoing trauma that underpins the inequities we are striving to address.

Brandon University Department of Physics & Astronomy: Sessional Teaching Positions

UNBC: Senior Laboratory Instructor, Advanced Research Computing Office of Research

The Advanced Research Computing Senior Lab Instructor (SLI) will report to the Office of Research and will also be appointed in a relevant Academic Unit and may teach (as time allows) courses or portions of courses to graduate students and senior undergraduates on topics relevant to research computing. The SLI supports researchers (including faculty and students) in their use of advanced and high performance computing (HPC) at UNBC.

This support includes working with researchers to assist with specific computing needs that arise including installing and using software, parallelizing, debugging and trouble shooting codes, and helping researchers interact with Compute Canada resources. The SLI will manage user accounts, requests for HPC systems, system administration, IT security related to HPC, UNIX maintenance and installation, maintenance of HPC Lab equipment, monitoring systems, responding to alerts and scheduler tuning for clusters. The SLI will work closely with ITS on new HPC project implementations to ensure systems will work properly in a complex infrastructure as well as integrating research systems with core IT services. The successful candidate will maintain HPC lab documentation and web pages, create and deliver workshops to users, and promote and encourage use of the HPC lab resources at UNBC. The SLI will develop project plans with tasks and timelines for future advanced research computing infrastructure projects. The SLI will work with the Advanced Research Computing Management Board on policies and planning related to HPC and assessing future UNBC needs for advanced research computing.

Previous experience with UNIX (essential) and Windows operating systems in a networked hybrid environment, with exposure to the tools used in advanced research computing / high performance computing is required. Experience with software installation and scripting languages in a UNIX environment is essential, and server and software configuration experience is an asset. Excellent interpersonal and teaching skills and the ability to establish effective working relationships with a diverse group, including faculty, students, and other researchers as well as senior technical staff, is essential. Applicants for this position should hold a relevant graduate degree that ideally includes experience in advanced research computing and scientific programming, together with a minimum of three years of relevant experience with HPC or equivalent systems, preferably in an academic environment. Executive Director, Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Corporation

Applications are invited for the position of Executive Director of the  Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT). Located on Maunakea, Hawai’i,  the 3.6m CFHT has historically been a world leader in wide-field  optical and near infrared imaging and, with the recently commissioned  instruments SPIRou and SITELLE, now also plays important roles in the  search for exoplanets around low-mass stars and the study of emission  line objects in the nearby and distant universe. We are seeking an  innovative and creative leader who, while maximizing the scientific  output of the current instrumentation suite, will usher CFHT into a  new era of scientific discoveries by taking a proactive role in the  advancement of the Maunakea Spectroscopic Explorer (MSE), endorsed by  the CFHT Partners and Board of Directors as the most scientifically  impactful future redevelopment of the site. The new CFHT Executive  Director will also represent CFHT within the Maunakea Observatories in  all negotiations regarding the renewal of the Maunakea Master Lease  and CFHT sublease.

CFHT has a staff of approximately 50 and operates with a US$8M annual  budget. The Executive Director is appointed by the Board of the CFHT  Corporation, a non-profit organization incorporated in the State of  Hawaii. Current members of the Corporation are the National Research  Council of Canada, the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique of  France, and the University of Hawaii. The Executive Director is  responsible to the Board for managing all aspects of the Corporation,  including the operation of the telescope, the implementation of the  observatory’s scientific and technical program, the appointment of  personnel, the preparation of budgets, the administration of financial  affairs, communications, and the negotiations of international  agreements. The Executive Director is also responsible for pursuing  extramural funding and potential associate partners, as directed by  the Board.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Astronomy or a closely related field,  or equivalent combination of education and experience. The successful  applicant will be committed to promote, within the Observatory, a  diverse, inclusive environment and a sense of belonging, and to foster  a culture of understanding and reconciliation with the native Hawaiian  community.  In addition, the following qualifications are considered  desirable:
●    Strong scientific leadership and an established record of research  achievement;
●    Successful experience in administration and management, including  overseeing the technical and/or scientific enterprise of an  observatory or other astronomy institute;
●    Proven skills in institutional and international relations;
●    Excellent interpersonal, communication and listening skills, and a  proven record of effective communications with governing bodies,  staff, funding agencies, local community, and the astronomical  community at large;
●    Proven ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams;
●    Successful experience in acting as an ambassador on behalf of their  organization and/or of the community at large;
●    Experience with the development, procurement or deployment of new  instrumentation.

The Executive Director is expected to reside on Hawai’i Island, and to  take office in the CFHT Headquarters located in Waimea (Kamuela). A  competitive salary will be offered and the Corporation provides a  comprehensive benefit package. The starting date for the position is  negotiable, and could be as early as September 2021. The Executive  Director term is five years and can be extended upon review.

Post Offer / Employment conditions: To comply with the requirement to  work occasionally at the observatory’s altitude of 4200 meters, the  applicant must pass a post-offer high altitude medical exam.  Documentation to verify eligibility for employment in the United  States will have to be furnished at the start of work.
